Volunteers play an important part in our ministry…their helping hands and caring hearts enhance the quality of life for our residents.  If you are interested in volunteering directly with residents, there are great opportunities for retirees, seniors, youth (8 and older), and anyone in-between.  Come and spend time with some wonderful people while helping them, receive plenty of smiles and make new friends.

All this can be yours for just a few hours of your time, as you assist residents and staff in the following Day Programs.  The programs are Monday – Friday, 9:45a – 2:45p.

Connections:  Refers to “connecting” the 5 basic sensory needs all together.  By using the concept of the “Bright Eyes” theory we combine Smell, Movement, Touch, Sight, Hearing, and Taste into an activity to stimulate the residents’ senses.

FOCUS is designed to meet the cognitive, therapeutic and life skill development needs of adult individuals with MR/DD who want to participate in social and recreational activities.  The participants are involved in and learn from a Science Program, Music Appreciation, Theater, Current Events, Travel, and Cooking.  Focus goes off campus daily and goes swimming a few times each week.  They also help with the sensory garden.  With Occupational and Speech Therapy and the Activities Department working together, the benefits of FOCUS are many…friendships, increased independence in decision-making, and a great opportunity to meet people in the community!

HOPE is designed to meet the emotional, cognitive, therapeutic, and life skill needs of adult individuals with MR/DD who are experiencing significant declines characterized by changes in such areas as memory, speech, reasoning, and judgment. The program is participant-centered with the goal of maximizing feelings of safety, security, dignity, and “connectedness”.   Therapeutic activities/experiences are planned based on past and current interests, preferences, and needs of each person served.

We also need volunteers at:

Vail Meadows Therapeutic Riding Center

Therapeutic Riding Classes:  Side walkers and horse leaders are needed.

Activity Assistants:  To assist clients in the various centers such as arts and crafts, sewing, gardening,

stable care, horse grooming,  music, etc.

Do you have some special talents you would like to teach others ...cooking...quilting...line dancing beading...scrap booking...martial arts...just to name a few.  Sharing your talents will help our program grow!

If you would like to volunteer indirectly…you may consider becoming a pen pal, or mending resident clothing.  Groups or families are also welcome to “adopt a cottage” and assist with weeding, planting flower boxes, etc.  New members are always welcome to join the LHM Auxiliary…five meetings are held each year, with their fund raising efforts directly benefiting residents.

Our residents love a good party!  If you or your group sing, dance, play a musical instrument,
or read poetry, we would enjoy arranging a time for you to entertain.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call the Volunteer Coordinator at 419-725-5266, to schedule an appointment.  Hours are: Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
