In 1928, Pastor Max Schleicher and a
small group
of fri
ends
committed themselves to providing care
for people with
developmental disabilities. At that time,
facilities where people with special
needs could progress
through care were almost non-existent. With the help
of
family and a few dedicated friends, this small band of
volunteers pooled their
resources to build the first
cottage at Luther Home of Mercy.
Built in 1928, Cottage #1 originally
housed three residents
and two
live in
staff members from the Deaconess
community. The first residents
came to live in Cottage #1
in 1929.
Despite limited resources, three more
cottages
were built in the 1930's.
Additional cottages were built in
1953
and 1970 and the Habilitation Center
and
a 32 bed
addition were completed in 1984.
During 1991 an Outreach Ministry was established,
making the
first
off-campus home for semi-independent
living possible. In 1997 a
second home was opened. Both homes have two individuals living there.
Since 1992, 3 more cottages have been added,
and
in
1997 we saw the
exciting addition of a
state of the
art
gymnasium and
swimming pool.
These
new
cottages
are all single bed-rooms,
giving the
residents
more privacy and
modern homes.
Through the years, Luther Home of Mercy has
been blessed with people
sharing commitment to the dream of helping others. Friends have joined
together, donating their time, talents and resources to make life just a
little bit better for those in need. Working as one, these generous friends
have turned a cornfield into a beautiful community to enhance the lives
of people with mental and/or developmental disabilities.
Nestled on a spacious country campus in
Williston Ohio,
Luther Home
of Mercy is a not-for-profit residential care
facility serving
adults with
mental retardation and/or
developmental disabilities. One hundred
and twenty nine
people live at Luther Home, hailing from many different
States,
all walks of life, religions and races. Ours is a
community of faith,
and in
that faith lies a belief and
commitment to our residents.
We affirm the worth and value of each individual,
helping
residents
foster personal independence,
developmental potential, expanding
emotional
and intellectual thresholds, while at the same
time enhancing
physical
well being.
This is a caring community...a community in which
all can
grow. Here
residents, staff and volunteers
work together to accentuate the
positives and accept
individual differences. We understand that there
will be
challenges, yet we seek to provide inspiration
and hope for the future.
